Overview

Yard long beans (also known as asparagus bean, snake bean, or Chinese long bean, Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis) are a heat-loving, climbing vegetable crop widely grown in warm climates, particularly in Southeast Asia.

Climate: Yard long beans thrive in hot and humid conditions. They are a tropical/subtropical crop and prefer daytime temperatures between and ( and ). They are very sensitive to cold and frost; planting should only occur after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

Soil: They prefer well-draining, loose, friable loamy soil but can tolerate a range of soil types. Optimal soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral (5.5 to 7.5). They are legumes, meaning they fix their own nitrogen, so soils heavy in nitrogen can lead to excessive leaf growth and reduced bean production.
